Internship Overview

This summer, Carbon Brief is offering a paid three-week journalism internship for students or recent graduates eager to gain hands-on experience in climate communications. The placement runs from 13 to 31 July and follows a hybrid schedule: part of the time you’ll work at the office near London Bridge station in central London, and the rest remotely.

The internship is paid at the London Living Wage (£14.80 per hour), with an additional £100 travel bursary to help cover commuting costs. Office hours are 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday, with a one-hour lunch break.

What You Will Do

As an intern, you’ll become an integral part of the team, shadowing staff and contributing across multiple areas. Your responsibilities will include:

• Researching, writing, and publishing an article for Carbon Brief—with guidance from experienced journalists.
• Promoting your article using visuals and social media channels.
• Assisting with research and writing for Carbon Brief’s award-winning newsletters.
• Helping identify new stories in scientific papers and policy documents to shape the publication’s coverage.
• Creating and discussing content for social media platforms such as Twitter/X and Instagram.

What You Will Learn

This internship is designed to give you practical insights into how a small, independent but globally impactful journalism team operates. You will:

• Experience the day-to-day workings of a newsroom focused on climate issues.
• Observe how articles are developed step by step—from initial idea to final publication.
• Learn techniques for interrogating news, data, and reports to ensure accuracy and clarity.
• Pick up skills in using visuals effectively to enhance your journalism.

Desired Skills and Qualities

Carbon Brief is looking for candidates who demonstrate:

• A genuine interest in climate change and environmental issues.
• Some experience writing about technical topics for a general audience (self-published work is acceptable).
• Commitment to journalistic integrity and high ethical standards.
• Competency in word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g., MS Word/Excel or Google Docs/Sheets).
• Excellent spoken and written English.
• Familiarity with social media platforms (Twitter/X, Instagram) is a plus.
