Stack Overflow's founder and former CEO, Joel Spolsky, has officially handed the reins to Prashanth Chandrasekar, who has been settling in as the new chief executive over the past two months. Spolsky, who remains chairman, characterized the move as a "sabbatical" rather than retirement, emphasizing that the company's future is now in capable hands.
"I’m really enjoying discovering just how little I knew about running medium-sized companies, as I watch Prashanth rearrange everything—for the better," Spolsky said. "The best possible outcome for me is if he proves what a bad CEO I was by doing a much better job."
Background: A Sabbatical, Not a Retirement
Spolsky, who lives in Manhattan's Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC), insists he is far from idle. He chairs three companies: Stack Overflow, Glitch (formerly Fog Creek Software), and HASH, a simulation startup still under the radar. Glitch, led by CEO Anil Dash, has grown to millions of apps after raising a significant funding round.
"I think in every era there has to be some kind of simplified programming environment for the quiet majority of developers," Spolsky noted. Glitch aims to serve developers who want to write code and run it without complex administration features like git branches or multistep deployment.
HASH, meanwhile, is building an open-source platform for agent-based simulations. Spolsky explained: "Suppose you’re a city planner modeling traffic for a new bus line. You can simulate every 'agent' — each commuter — and test millions of routes. It’s incredibly computationally intensive but works without a closed-form formula."

Chandrasekar's promotion signals a strategic shift at Stack Overflow, the world's largest Q&A hub for developers. Spolsky, a longtime CEO and co-founder, is stepping back to focus on broader ventures, while Chandrasekar brings new operational focus. Industry analyst Sarah Perez of TechCrunch noted: "This is a natural evolution for a maturing tech company. Spolsky's sabbatical allows fresh leadership to drive product innovation and revenue growth."
For developers, the change may bring faster feature updates and new integrations, as Chandrasekar reorganizes the company from within. Spolsky remains active as chairman, joining customer calls and weekly meetings, but the day-to-day helm has passed. The move underscores a trend of founders transitioning to advisory roles after scaling platforms to millions of users.
